A brazen attack by armed bandits on a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) checkpoint in Kebbi State on Saturday night has left one officer dead and the outpost completely burned down, heightening security concerns in the region.
The deadly assault occurred at the Maje border outstation in Bagudo Local Government Area on November 8, 2025. The slain officer has been identified as Deputy Superintendent of Customs (DSC) S. Muhammad.
According to reports, the assailants, suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group, descended on the customs post in large numbers on motorcycles. They opened fire indiscriminately, fatally wounding DSC Muhammad. Following the shooting, the bandits set the customs post and an official vehicle ablaze before retreating towards the border forests.
The incident has sparked fear among residents and security personnel in the area, which has witnessed a disturbing rise in violent crime. This attack comes shortly after another major security breach in the same local government area, where the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly was abducted on October 31st before being rescued.
The Public Relations Officer for the NCS Kebbi State Command, Muhammad Tajudeen, has confirmed the attack.
In a show of solidarity, Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, attended the funeral prayers for the deceased officer at the Emir of Gwandu’s Palace in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, mourned the officer’s death, describing it as a “painful loss to the Service and the nation,” and has ordered a full investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
